Channel 5, a port information channel and decision-making tool using Artificial Intelligence, won the Jury’s Choice Award at the Med’INNOVANT competition on 21 November in Marseille.
Bastien Boulnois, Innovation Project Manager at MGI, presented the project before a panel of 40 judges representing the competition organisers and partners. The prize was awarded by Christine Cabau-Woehrel, President of the Marseille Port Authority Executive Board, and Hugues Parant, General Manager of the Euroméditerranée development agency, who organised the competition.
Channel 5 was developed in partnership with List, the CEA Tech institute for smart digital systems, as part of the Smart Port / Smart City initiative. The solution aims to give logistics operators a real-time overview of gate traffic and forecasts for expected import and export goods flows in shipping terminals. Thanks to its Artificial Intelligence engine, Channel 5 will also detect problems that could impact goods transit and will instantly propose alternative solutions to the professionals affected
Capturing all information
Channel 5 was designed to collect and merge data from a range of sources and to process and analyse it in order to provide information on the situation in the port. Data is taken from Port Community Systems (PCS), Terminal Operating Systems, weather forecasts, smart objects and information on road traffic, handling equipment breakdowns and strikes. This information will then be compared with a set of activity-based rules to assess whether operations are normal or disrupted and determine which players could be affected by any problems.
Terminal operators, port authorities, road haulers, shipping agents and freight forwarders all stand to gain directly from this new service. And what’s more, the city as a whole, especially motorists, will benefit from a reduction in traffic around terminals.
Dominique Lebreton, MGI Audits, Projects and Marketing Director, who accepted the award, explained that “MGI is especially proud to have received the Jury’s Choice award. We see it as recognition of our ongoing commitment to the Marseille port community. MGI provides the digital building block for the “French Smart Port in Med”. This award demonstrates MGI’s drive for innovation within the Marseille region’s Smart Port – Smart City. The information systems developed by MGI in this context will be offered for roll-out in all ports that want to work alongside us in our innovative approach.”
Channel 5 is currently in the POC (Proof of Concept) phase and will be finalised in 2018.
